What is the toy you remember having as a child that you treasured? I’m pretty sure everyone’s got one. For me, one of my favorites was a Holly Hobby rag doll with green dress and another stuffed family of dolls that had velcro hands you could connect to each other. I still remember the Christmas Day I opened my gifts. I was so excited.

Well, the big Labor Day Holiday is coming up this weekend. In the past, I volunteered at the Telluride Film Festival spending the days watching the newest film releases. On Labor Day, they have a big barbecue with all kinds of scrumptious options, and a panel of speakers from the festival. This year, I’ll probably try some new and old recipes. Of course, nowadays you can find recipes online but I still like to pull out a favorite cookbook and have a go at it.

The July 2007 issue of In Style magazine published a recipe for John Stamos’s Marinade. The article says to marinate chicken for 8 hours or overnight and you can also do the same for shrimp and scallops soaking them for two hours. Then, on Labor Day, go ahead and fire up the grill, skewer the seafood and there’s your start to the meal.
I used to love to go to Macy’s cooking school classes where they displayed their process for making the recipes and gave attendees samples. One of them was sponsored by Bon Appétit magazine and featured a Chopped Salad with Feta, Green Onions and Pine Nuts. I found a somewhat revised version online.
For dessert, how about some Lemon-Butter Shortbread Cookies? I saved the recipe from a local magazine. Here’s a similar version of one online.

What cyclist, at least in passing, hasn’t thought about picturing himself participating in the Tour de France? Yesterday, July 24, 2022, Jonas Vingegaard, from Denmark, won the 2022 Tour. See the beautiful AP photos here. The grueling three-week course ended at the Champs-Elysees in France. Wondering what route he took along with the others? The first Tour de France took place on July 1, 1903 when, according to an article on History.com, “60 men mounted their bicycles outside the Café au Reveil Matin in the Parisian suburb of Montgeron.” The article states that the original intent of the race was a publicity stunt.
Can women compete in the Tour de France? Well, yes, well sort of. They have their own tour that starts after the men’s. According to Yahoo Sports, it’s back after 33 years. Yahoo Sports notes that the first women’s tour was in 1955.
