The first Tour de France took place on July 1, 1903 when, according to an article on History.com, “60 men mounted their bicycles outside the Café au Reveil Matin in the Parisian suburb of Montgeron.” The article states that the original intent of the race was a publicity stunt.

Can women compete in the Tour de France? Well, yes, well sort of. They have their own tour that starts after the men’s. According to Yahoo Sports, it’s back after 33 years. Yahoo Sports notes that the first women’s tour was in 1955.
